Mode Games designed and developed Robot Reading for iOS and Android, combining structured literacy content with adventure gameplay, robot customisation and animated storytelling. Our work included Unity development, bespoke voice-listening technology, teacher tools, platform levels, player progression, Firebase integration and thousands of unlockable robot combinations.

Robot Reading is a colourful learning adventure for iOS and Android that helps children build early reading, speaking and writing skills through play.
Players create and name their own robot before travelling across the galaxy to stop the villainous Terrible Tron.
Terrible Tron has stolen the supercharger that powers the robots’ home world. Without it, the robots cannot recharge their batteries. Players must use their growing literacy skills to explore four unique worlds, recover the supercharger and make the robots happy again.

Children guide their robot through each level by answering questions rather than mastering difficult platform controls.
Activities include:
Children answer using simple buttons, by dragging letters and words into place, or by speaking directly to the app.
Each correct answer helps their robot move forward, overcome an obstacle or trigger a fun and unexpected action.
Learning rewards children with new robot parts inspired by familiar household appliances, including fridges, toasters, lamps and kettles.
Players can combine different bodies, heads, arms, legs, colours and accessories to create their own unique robot. With thousands of possible combinations, every new part gives children another reason to keep learning, experimenting and personalising their character.

Robot Reading includes bespoke Audio Voice Listen technology that allows children to speak directly to the app.
Children begin by practising individual letter sounds and simple words. As their confidence grows, they progress to reading complete sentences aloud.
The app listens to their response and provides supportive feedback, helping children develop pronunciation, reading fluency and confidence.
The adventure takes players across four colourful locations:
Each world introduces new environments, animated obstacles and literacy challenges before players face Terrible Tron, stop his plan and recover the supercharger!
Between lessons, children see their customised robot travel through carefully designed platform levels.
The platforming includes clear scaffolding, guidance and assistance so children can enjoy the action without difficult controls or being left behind. Educational answers determine how the robot moves, which path it takes and how it overcomes each obstacle.
This keeps the experience exciting while ensuring learning remains the focus.
Interaction breaks are built into each level, giving children natural moments to pause between lessons.
Progress is saved throughout the experience, so children can leave midway through a level and return later to continue from where they stopped. This supports shorter learning sessions at home or in the classroom without requiring a child to restart an activity
.
Fun, fully animated cutscenes bring the adventure to life.
Characters use lip-synched dialogue, expressive animation and narration to tell a simple but engaging story for young children.
The cutscenes introduce each world, celebrate progress and build towards the final confrontation with Terrible Tron.

Robot Reading includes a teacher tool that allows educators to tailor lesson content for classroom delivery.
Teachers can select activities that focus on the sounds, words and literacy skills currently being taught to their class, learning group or individual students.
This supports guided lessons, small-group activities and independent learning.

Thank you Mode for believing in the kids we work with and throwing everything that you and the team had at this project. And finally – thanks for delivering a super cool and engaging game. Hip hop meets maths and science – got me hooked!

We had the pleasure to work with the Mode Team on the development of digital learning apps for the Early Learning STEM Australia (ELSA) and the ELSA schools program. The final products (on both occasions) were innovative and conceptually strong, in part because Shane and his team has a unique skill to establishes a strong nexus between creative design and functional use.

Mode's commitment to craft has always been impressive. The team is a pleasure to work with, and their instincts for what makes a game feel great mean the final product always lands better than I'd originally imagined. I look forward to the next project we can work on together.
