Step onto the court and serve like Grand Slam champion Dylan Alcott in this inclusive Kinect experience created for Madame Tussauds Sydney. Developed in Unity, the attraction combines full-body motion tracking, striking real-time visuals and simple, accessible gameplay designed to engage visitors of all abilities, including people with disability.
When Madame Tussauds Sydney introduced Australian of the Year and Grand Slam champion Dylan Alcott to its collection, the goal was to do more than unveil a new wax figure. The museum wanted to maximise the impact of Dylan's inclusion by creating a memorable interactive attraction that encouraged visitors to actively engage with the exhibit rather than simply observe it.
The experience was designed to celebrate Dylan's achievements while giving visitors the opportunity to step into his shoes and experience the thrill of serving like a champion.

The attraction needed to be intuitive, engaging, and reliable enough to operate continuously in a high-traffic public venue. It also needed to integrate seamlessly with the museum's existing multimedia systems while delivering visuals worthy of one of Australia's most recognisable sporting icons.

Mode Games designed and developed a bespoke Unity game using Microsoft's Kinect motion-sensing technology, allowing visitors to control the experience using their own body movements, no controllers required.

Players perform either a left or right-handed tennis serve, attempting to match the perfect swing timing and speed to serve just like Dylan Alcott.
Built in Unity using the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), the game delivers a highly polished visual experience while maintaining the performance and reliability required for a permanent public installation. URP enabled us to create realistic lighting, premium materials, post-processing effects, and smooth animation, giving the attraction a modern, broadcast-quality appearance.
To further immerse players, we created:

Beyond the gameplay itself, we integrated directly with the Madame Tussauds multimedia control system using network socket communication. When the game begins, nearby exhibits automatically reduce their audio levels, allowing players to enjoy the experience without disrupting surrounding attractions. The game was also featured on Channel 10's morning show, showcasing the interactive experience to a national audience. Or you can book your ticket and find out more at Madame Tassuads

More than three years after launch, the experience continues to be a featured attraction at Madame Tussauds Sydney, demonstrating its long-term reliability and lasting visitor appeal. By combining immersive gameplay with intuitive motion controls, the installation has successfully increased visitor engagement, encouraged longer dwell times, and enhanced the overall museum experience.

Mode has a level of polish and attention to detail to their work that is impressive and rare as a development partner. I'd recommend that you talk to them about your next game project.

Thank you Mode for believing in the kids we work with and throwing everything that you and the team had at this project. And finally – thanks for delivering a super cool and engaging game. Hip hop meets maths and science – got me hooked!

We had the pleasure to work with the Mode Team on the development of digital learning apps for the Early Learning STEM Australia (ELSA) and the ELSA schools program. The final products (on both occasions) were innovative and conceptually strong, in part because Shane and his team has a unique skill to establish a strong nexus between creative design and functional use.

Mode's commitment to craft has always been impressive. The team is a pleasure to work with, and their instincts for what makes a game feel great mean the final product always lands better than I'd originally imagined. I look forward to the next project we can work on together.

Mode are absolute experts in their domain. Not only did they deliver seamlessly on the execution, but were able to ideate with us along the entire journey. They effortlessly collaborated with our design and engineering teams to integrate the game into a broader campaign experience for our client, and made the process enjoyable every step of the way.

Shane and the team at Mode Games were a pleasure to work with from start to finish and helped us bring our creative concept to life in an engaging way to deliver a great finished game.

We’d love to hear about your idea or project! Share as much detail as you can, and our team will get back to you to chat about what we can do for you.
